Cut Down Electricity Bills Up To 90% With Solar Energy
How will it feel to save your electricity bill amount every month?
Sounds exciting, but is it really possible?
The answer is yes! There is an assured way to reduce your monthly electricity bills. Let’s understand how.
A family of four living in Delhi in a 900-1000 square feet home normally uses 15-20 electrical appliances including mobile chargers, a refrigerator, a washing machine, a geyser, five-six tube lights, a television set, 1-2 air-conditioners, and a few electrical appliances in the kitchen. Adding up the daily power consumption for the family in a month, it’ll go somewhere around 930-940 units/month.
In Delhi, households using less than 200 units per month are charged Rs. 3/kWh for electricity. If the usage is more than 200 but less than 400 units, the charge levied is Rs. 4.50/kWh. Between 401 units and 800 units, the cost of energy consumption per unit is Rs. 6.50/kWh. Above 800 units but less than 1,200 units, the cost of energy is Rs 7/kWh while above 1,200 units the charge is Rs. 8/kWh.
Hence, considering the usage and according to the charges levied by the state, the total bill, of the above-mentioned family would be around Rs. 6,500-7000 a month. However, if they have access to the rooftop, they can switch to the solar power system to reduce their electricity bills.
There are two types of solar-power systems- Off-grid and On-grid. Since we’re talking about saving money, then choosing on-grid solar-system over the off-grid system is a better option. In simple words- off-grid solar-system means getting totally cut off from the regular electric power supply. Hence, going completely off-grid is a costlier option compared to on-grid solar-power system. This is because one needs to have a larger capacity of solar-system to meet the demand which is met through the grid in case of the on-grid system.
Let’s understand with an example- if your monthly electricity bill is around Rs 6000-7000, a 5kW solar-system will be sufficient enough to cut your bill by a minimum of 90%. On the other hand, if you plan to go off-grid, you would need a bigger solar-power system to reduce your electricity bill to zero and can meet the peak demand by storing extra electricity. Also, to go off-grid, at least a 10kW system will be required which would cost you around Rs 10-12 lakh and an additional Rs 1-2 lakh every three to five years on maintenance and battery replacements. So, an off-grid system is twice as much as costlier than an on-grid system.
Another catch here is that using the off-grid solar-system will be financially beneficial only after 10 years of installation. Hence, going with the on-grid system is a cost-effective and more reliable way to use solar energy. Also, an on-grid system would cost around Rs 2-3 lakh with the government-provided subsidy in Delhi and requires no storage with minimum maintenance.
